To bring variety, and inspired by Paolozzi's combination of drawn and photographic images, I wanted to incorporate photography into my work. I then saw an exhibit of interesting vintage scientific equipment in MMU's Grosvenor building to capture.
I put photographic images together with hand drawn motifs, to see how they relate. I found this difficult, and only some designs worked. The most successful ones include photographic imagery that shares colours with my existing palettes, so it blends in more easily with textures and drawn motifs, (see below). The scale of the car, equipment and dials has been altered (huge dials and a small car) which adds a sense of playfulness; I can use this technique to make future pieces more quirky.
Successful design combining photographic and drawn material |
To address the problem of clashing colours, I used photographs from my original source, my home. These designs worked better and I was able to blend the drawn and photographic elements more easily. They also had a more whimsical, lighter feel. The layering works well, and I want to experiment more with textural backgrounds as they add depth and alter the mood of designs.
